Visiting an active volcanic area with children requires extra planning. The crater lake is highly acidic, and the sulfur fumes can be strong. You must carefully manage how much time your family spends at the water's edge.

How does the sulfur affect children?

The strong sulfur gas can cause headaches or nausea if inhaled for too long.

You are strongly advised to keep your visit to the crater edge between 15 and 30 minutes. Children are often more sensitive to strong smells. Bring a face mask or scarf for everyone in your family to cover their noses.

Can kids touch the crater lake water?

No. Touching, wading, or swimming in the lake is strictly prohibited and dangerous.

The water has a pH level between 0.5 and 1.3, which is highly acidic. Keep young children close to you while walking on the white sand. You must ensure they do not try to play in the water.

Is it too cold for young children?

Temperatures range from 10°C to 22°C, which can feel chilly for young kids.

The crater sits 2,430 meters above sea level. Dress children in a warm jacket or sweater. Closed-toe walking shoes are also necessary because the rocky paths around the crater are uneven.

How do families reach the crater from the entrance?

You can take the 15-minute Ontang-Anting shuttle or pay a premium to drive your own car up.

The orange shuttle minibus costs an additional around IDR 30,000 round trip. The ride up the winding road takes about 15 minutes. If you prefer to keep your family in your own vehicle, you can pay a premium fee of IDR 150,000 to park at the top.

What else is there for kids to do nearby?

The surrounding Ciwidey area has tea plantations and a deer conservation park.

After spending 30 minutes at the crater, you can visit Ranca Upas Deer Conservation. Families can buy carrots on-site to hand-feed the friendly, free-roaming Javanese deer. You can also explore the Rancabali Tea Plantation just minutes down the road.

Are there facilities for families at the crater?

There are toilets and local food stalls near the parking area, but no water is sold at the rim.

Bring your own drinking water for the walk down to the lake. Make sure to carry small amounts of cash. You will need it to pay for the public toilets, shuttle tickets, and snacks from the local vendors.
